If you asked me to pinpoint what has done the most for my understanding of highways, I would tell you without hesitation that it’s events; the conferences, exhibitions, demonstration days, networking evenings. The moments when the industry gathers itself in one room, and you get to walk into it.
There is no GCSE in highways infrastructure, no school careers assembly where someone explains what a traffic management company does or why street furniture matters, or what a highways authority is responsible for.
The question I get asked more than any other, and the answer that surprises people.
At 16 I had three career ideas: something creative, something vague, and something involving as little maths as possible. Highways and infrastructure were not on that list, yet here we are.
